What follows is not a ranked table of competitors with star ratings, and there is a reason for that: we would be publishing prices and feature claims about other people’s products that we cannot verify and that change without notice.

What we can give you is the set of questions that actually separate these tools, because after using and rebuilding one for a couple of years, the differences that matter are not the ones the comparison posts rank on.

If you read one thing

The pricing model tells you more about how a tool will behave than the feature list does. A tool that bills per word has a commercial interest in you generating more words. A tool that bills per site does not care how much you write and has to make the writing good enough to keep you.

The six questions worth asking

1. Who pays for the tokens?

Two models exist. Either the vendor buys AI capacity and resells it to you inside a plan, or you bring your own provider key and the vendor charges only for the software.

Resold capacity is simpler to start and has a metre running. You get credits, words, or “generations”, and when they run out you either stop or upgrade. Bring-your-own-key means one more setup step and then no metre: your provider bills you at their published rate, and the plugin’s price is fixed.

Neither is correct in the abstract. If you publish four posts a month, resold capacity is probably cheaper and definitely easier. If you publish a hundred, or run client sites, the metre becomes the dominant cost and the arithmetic flips hard. Work out your own numbers before choosing — ours are in the cost section here.

2. Does anything publish without a human?

Ask directly, and read the answer carefully. “Automated publishing” and “scheduled drafts” are very different products wearing similar words.

Ours defaults to
draft
. Direct publishing is available, but it is a setting you have to go and change deliberately, and the default is the safe one rather than the impressive one. That is the distinction worth looking for in any tool you evaluate: not whether autonomous publishing is possible, but whether it is what happens when you do nothing.

3. What happens to your content if you uninstall?

This is the question nobody asks and everybody regrets. If generated posts are stored as shortcodes, in custom tables, or rendered through the plugin at page load, deactivating the plugin empties your site.

Test it before you commit: generate one post on a staging site, deactivate the plugin, and look at the front end. If the article is still there as ordinary content, you can leave whenever you like. If it is not, you cannot.

4. Can you see what each run cost?

Per-call token counts and an estimated cost, grouped by the article that caused them. Without it you have no way to tell an expensive model choice from a cheap one, and no way to answer “why was this month higher”.

5. What happens when the provider fails?

APIs rate-limit and go down. A tool tied to one provider stops with them. A tool with a failover chain carries on with a different model, which is worth knowing about in advance because the second model may write differently.

6. Is it honest about what it cannot do?

The most useful signal in this market. A vendor whose site admits a limitation — a domain cap, a feature that does not exist yet, a case where the tool is the wrong choice — is a vendor whose other claims you can weigh. A page of unqualified superlatives tells you nothing except that nobody edited it.

 <text class="fig-title" x="10" y="20" font-size="14">Which pricing model wins depends on volume</text>
 <line x1="60" y1="190" x2="620" y2="190" stroke="#94A3B8"/>
 <line x1="60" y1="40" x2="60" y2="190" stroke="#94A3B8"/>
 <text class="fig-muted" x="60" y="208" font-size="10.5">few posts</text>
 <text class="fig-muted" x="548" y="208" font-size="10.5">many posts</text>
 <text class="fig-muted" x="14" y="46" font-size="10.5">cost</text>

 <text x="470" y="80" font-size="11" fill="#FF6B35">metered per word</text>

 <text x="430" y="158" font-size="11" class="fig-accent">per site + provider at cost</text>

 <circle cx="234" cy="151" r="5" fill="#0F172A"/>
 <text class="fig-muted" x="180" y="136" font-size="10.5">crossover</text>

 <text class="fig-muted" x="60" y="224" font-size="10.5">Where the crossover sits depends on your article length and model choice, so work it out rather than assuming.</text>

Both lines are real products. The only question is which side of the crossing you publish on.

Categories of tool, rather than a ranking

Metered all-in-one writers. Buy a plan, get words. Easiest start, smoothest onboarding, cost scales with output. Best for low, predictable volume.

Bring-your-own-key plugins. Fixed software cost, provider billed separately at cost. More setup, no metre. Best for high volume or many sites.

General-purpose writing apps with a WordPress export. Strong editors, weak integration. You write elsewhere and paste. Fine if the editor is where you live.

Agency and workflow platforms. Built around approvals, roles and multiple sites. Heavier than a solo publisher needs, correct for a team.

Ours is in the second category. If you are in the first category’s sweet spot, one of those will serve you better, and we would rather you found that out now.

How to evaluate in an afternoon

Install on a staging site, not production.

Generate three articles on a subject you know well, so you can judge accuracy rather than fluency.

Check where the content is stored. Deactivate the plugin and look.

Find the cost of those three runs in the tool’s own reporting. If you cannot, note that.

Try to make it publish something without your approval. Note whether you could.

Read the vendor’s refund terms before the trial ends, not after.

Common questions

<details>

Why won’t you name and rank competitors?

Because doing it properly means publishing current prices and feature claims for products we do not control, and doing it badly means guessing. Prices change quarterly in this market. A comparison table we cannot keep accurate would mislead you, and we have removed enough unverifiable claims from our own site to know how easily that happens.

</details>
<details>

Is AI-written content penalised by Google?

Google’s stated position is that it rewards helpful content regardless of how it was produced, and acts against low-value content produced at scale to manipulate rankings. The practical reading: generated drafts that a person edits and verifies are fine; unreviewed bulk output is the thing that gets hit.

</details>
<details>

Do I need my own API key?

For bring-your-own-key tools, yes, and it is a ten-minute job. You create an account with a provider, generate a key, paste it in. What you get in exchange is no metre and no markup.

</details>
<details>

What does it actually cost to generate an article?

With bring-your-own-key, it is the provider’s token price for the words involved, which for a typical article is cents rather than dollars on a mid-tier model. Our cost calculator works it out using the same rates the plugin uses to bill its own usage log.

</details>
<details>

Can these tools write about a subject only I know?

Only if you tell them. A model has no access to your internal knowledge, your customers or your product specifics. Tools that let you supply a business profile and reference material produce something closer to usable; tools that only take a title produce something generic.

</details>

Where to go next

AI content generation inside WordPress covers how this works in practice, and Claude plugins for WordPress narrows it to one provider.

We make one of these, so treat this page accordingly.
