It is the work of getting your pages quoted by the systems that answer questions directly instead of handing over a list of links: ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot.

The name is new. Most of the work is not. What has changed is where the click goes, and whether there is a click at all.

The short version

Search used to send you traffic. Generative engines send you a mention, and sometimes a link under a fold nobody scrolls to. GEO is about being the source the answer was built from, which is a different job from being the first blue link.

Why it got its own name

For twenty years the deal was simple. You wrote a page, a search engine indexed it, and if you ranked well enough people clicked through and arrived on your site. You could count them.

An answer engine breaks that in the middle. Someone asks how to stop a WordPress plugin publishing without review. The model composes an answer out of several sources, states it plainly, and moves on. Your page might be one of the sources. The reader never sees it.

That is not automatically bad. A mention in an answer someone trusts is worth something, and for a product like ours a citation in “which WordPress AI plugins keep a human in the loop” is worth more than a hundred bounced sessions. But it is measured differently and won it differently, which is the whole reason the acronym exists.

 <text class="fig-title" x="10" y="22" font-size="15">Classic search</text>
 <rect x="10" y="36" width="270" height="34" rx="8" fill="#FFFFFF" stroke="#E2E8F0"/>
 <text x="24" y="58" font-size="12">Query</text>
 <line x1="145" y1="70" x2="145" y2="94" stroke="#94A3B8" stroke-width="1.5"/>
 <rect x="10" y="94" width="270" height="34" rx="8" fill="#FFFFFF" stroke="#E2E8F0"/>
 <text x="24" y="116" font-size="12">Ten links, ranked</text>
 <line x1="145" y1="128" x2="145" y2="152" stroke="#94A3B8" stroke-width="1.5"/>
 <rect x="10" y="152" width="270" height="34" rx="8" fill="#FFFFFF" stroke="#7C3AED"/>
 <text x="24" y="174" font-size="12" class="fig-accent">Visitor lands on your page</text>
 <text class="fig-muted" x="10" y="212" font-size="11">You can count the visit.</text>

<line x1="318" y1="20" x2="318" y2="230" stroke="#E2E8F0" stroke-width="1"/>

 <text class="fig-title" x="348" y="22" font-size="15">Generative answer</text>
 <rect x="348" y="36" width="270" height="34" rx="8" fill="#FFFFFF" stroke="#E2E8F0"/>
 <text x="362" y="58" font-size="12">Question</text>
 <line x1="483" y1="70" x2="483" y2="94" stroke="#94A3B8" stroke-width="1.5"/>
 <rect x="348" y="94" width="270" height="34" rx="8" fill="#FFFFFF" stroke="#E2E8F0"/>
 <text x="362" y="116" font-size="12">Model reads several sources</text>
 <line x1="483" y1="128" x2="483" y2="152" stroke="#94A3B8" stroke-width="1.5"/>
 <rect x="348" y="152" width="270" height="34" rx="8" fill="#FFFFFF" stroke="#A3E635"/>
 <text x="362" y="174" font-size="12">Answer, with a citation</text>
 <text class="fig-muted" x="348" y="212" font-size="11">You may get a mention and no visit.</text>

The same question, two different economies. GEO is about the right-hand column.

What actually seems to move the needle

Nobody outside these companies knows the weightings, and anyone who tells you they do is selling something. What follows is what holds up across enough cases to act on.

Say the thing, early, in plain words

A model composing an answer is looking for a sentence it can lift. If your page spends four paragraphs warming up before it defines the term, the sentence it lifts will be someone else’s. Put the direct answer in the first hundred words and then elaborate.

Be the page that is specific

Generic pages lose. “AI can help improve your content workflow” is unquotable. “Generated drafts land as ordinary WordPress posts, so deactivating the plugin changes nothing on the front end” is quotable, because it is a claim with edges.

Structure it so a machine can find the part it needs

Headings that name their content, short paragraphs, real lists, and a FAQ block where the questions are questions people ask. This is not a trick. It is the same structure that helps a reader skim.

Be findable by the crawlers that matter

None of it counts if GPTBot is blocked in your robots.txt. That is worth checking before anything else, and it is a five-minute job. We wrote it up in GPTBot vs ClaudeBot vs PerplexityBot.

How GEO differs from SEO in practice

The unit of success changes. A ranking position becomes a citation, or an unattributed sentence that is recognisably yours.

Freshness matters differently. A model with a training cutoff may know a version of you from a year ago. A model with live retrieval sees today. You are optimising for both at once.

Measurement gets harder. There is no rank tracker for “was quoted”. You end up watching brand mentions, direct traffic, and asking the engines your own questions on a schedule.

Thin content is punished faster. An answer engine has no reason to cite the fourth page saying the same thing. In classic search, that page still ranked somewhere.

Is it worth doing yet?

If your buyers ask questions that have factual answers, yes. Technical products, professional services, anything where someone researches before buying. Those are exactly the questions people now type into a chat box instead of a search bar.

If your traffic is discovery-led — someone was browsing and found you — it matters less for now, and the classic work still pays better.

Our own honest position: we do both, we measure the classic side properly and the generative side roughly, and we are suspicious of anyone quoting precise GEO numbers this early.

Common questions

<details>

Is GEO just a rebrand of SEO?

There is heavy overlap. Clean structure, fast pages, real expertise and clear writing help in both. What is genuinely different is the target: you are writing to be extracted and quoted rather than clicked, and that changes how you open a page and how specific you make each claim.

</details>
<details>

Does GEO replace SEO?

No, and treating it that way would be expensive. Classic search still sends most referral traffic for most sites. GEO is an additional surface, not a substitute, and the two share most of their groundwork.

</details>
<details>

How do I tell whether it is working?

Ask the engines. Pick twenty questions a buyer would actually ask, run them through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews on a fixed schedule, and record whether you are mentioned and whether what they say is right. It is manual and it is the only measurement that currently means anything.

</details>
<details>

Can I stop AI engines using my content instead?

Partly. You can disallow the named crawlers in robots.txt, and the major ones honour it. Understand the trade: blocking them removes you from the answers as well as from the training data, so it is a business decision rather than a technical one.

</details>
<details>

Does llms.txt help with this?

It is a proposed convention, not a standard anyone is obliged to read, and there is no public evidence that any major engine currently weights it. It costs very little to publish and we do publish one. Treat it as cheap insurance rather than a lever.

</details>

Where to go next

What is LLM SEO? covers the same territory from the other common name for it. How to make a website more visible in AI search is the practical checklist version.

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation.
